BOX SCORE

Baltimore, Md.-- The Longwood University field hockey team suffered a 3-0 setback against Rider Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland.  The Lancers fall to 4-5 on the season while Rider improves to 5-2.  Longwood will return to action on Saturday, September 30, as they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on St. Joseph’s for a 12 p.m. match-up.

Longwood started off strong, racking up three penalty corners in the first eight minutes.  The Rider defense stood strong, keeping everything in front and not letting the Lancers pull off a shot.  The Broncs tallied their first goal of the afternoon under nine minutes into the contest, as Stephanie Walker snuck in behind the Longwood defense and carried the ball in on a breakaway, beating keeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) for the 1-0 lead.  Rider struck less than ten minutes later, and added an insurance goal two minutes out of the halftime break for the 3-0 win.

“We started off well, but we couldn’t convert our opportunities,” said head coach Nancy Joel.  “Rider is a very physical team and they took us off our game today, but we are going to go back and regroup for our trip up to Pennsylvania against two strong squads.”

West finished the game with seven saves, while her counterpart Krysta Bearish recorded one.  Rider out shot Longwood by a count of 12-2 and had a 11-8 advantage in penalty corners.
