FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University took a 5-1 field hockey victory past visiting Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the first NorPac Conference match of the season for both squads as the Lancers improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play. Longwood will return to action on Saturday September 9, as they travel to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. match.
Senior Katy Lernihan/Fredericksburg (Chancellor) got the Lancers going early, taking her own rebound and firing it past the Mountaineer goaltender Mikayla Paulson 10:14 into the match.
The Lancers added two more goals later in the first half, as juniors Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) and Katie Claxton/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) tallied their first goals of the season 3:12 apart, giving Longwood a 3-0 halftime lead. Newbold took a through ball from Claxton drawing the goalie out of the net, and faked a shot putting the keeper down on the turf and giving the forward a wide open net in front of her. For the third Lancer goal, Claxton was down low and took a free ball and chipped it over ASU’s goaltender for her first career goal in the Longwood uniform.
Longwood did not let up in the second half, as freshman Julia Hernandez/Norfolk (Maury) posted her first collegiate goal, taking a Newbold pass and sliding it in for LU’s fourth goal of the game. Senior Anne Hundley/Norfolk (Granby) tacked on a goal 55:19 into the match to give the Lancer’s a five goal cushion.
Starting keeper sophomore Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) was relieved by Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbighl) with 16:17 to go in the game. West was untested all afternoon as the Lancer defense buckled down and kept the Mountaineers offense off- balance.
ASU’s Alison Gradischer broke the Longwood shutout with 2:05 to go in the game, sneaking a shot between the post and Schmitz for the final 5-1 score.
Longwood dominated the game snapping 11 shots to ASU’s 4 and had the advantage in penalty corners 10-3.
