BOONE, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing 2-1 women’s soccer overtime decision at Southern Conference member Appalachian State University Sunday afternoon in North Carolina. It was the fourth overtime match of the season for the Lancers who are now 3-3-2, while the Mountaineers improved to 3-4. Longwood will play again September 23 at UNC Asheville of the Big South Conference beginning at 4 p.m..
At ASU, Longwood went ahead early at 10:45 on a goal from freshman Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) with an assist by senior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam). It was Fening’s team-leading third goal of the year. The hosts tied the contest at 1-1 with a goal at 35:53 when Jaclyn Hoffman scored unassisted. Appalachian State finally won the match with just 28-seconds remaining in the second, 10-minute extra period as Caroline Lowe moved the net on an assist from Dana Murphy at 109:32.
“We did not play well enough to win,” lamented 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “We got caught-up at the end in a breakaway and paid for it. This one definitely hurts.”
Appalachian State took a 34-10 advantage in shots, and had a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (109:32) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with 13 saves. Emma White (109:32) also went the distance in front of the net for the Mountaineers with four saves.
