September 16, 2006

BOX SCORE

RICHMOND, Va.-- Longwood University and University of Richmond battled for 110:00 to a 1-1 tie in men’s soccer action on Saturday evening at First Market Stadium in Richmond. On the season Longwood stands at 1-5-1, while Richmond has recorded a 2-4-2 record. The Lancers will return to action on Tuesday, September 19th, when they travel to South Carolina for a 7 p.m. match-up with the second ranked Clemson Tigers.

The only two goals of the match came within four minutes of each other in the first half as Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead, before Longwood tied the game a short time later.

Richmond converted on a breakaway for its first goal as Alex Naime made a move around the Lancer’s keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) for the 1-0 score 33:54 into the contest.

Longwood pressed the Spiders’ defense looking for the equalizer, that came less then four minutes later when junior Gary Smith/Ashland (Patrick Henry) knocked in his first goal of the season, on a cross from freshman Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) to knot the game at one apiece.

As the two squads battled for the next 72:05 looking for the go-ahead goal, each defense stood strong keeping everything in front for the 1-1 final. Freshmen Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) looked to have scored the go-ahead goal when he beat the Spider's goalie low but the ball bounced off the post and was cleared out ending the threat.

"We are happy as a coaching staff with the way the boys came out tonight," stated head coach Jon Atkinson. "We had our chances in the box, but the kids played hard and will take the momentum from this game into our big match against Clemson on Tuesday, one of the top programs in the country."

Longwood held the edge in shots 15-10 and corners 8-5. Youmans recorded two saves in net, while his counter part Matt Cully recorded five in 110:00 of action.
