NEW MARKET, Va. -- Longwood University totaled 139 points to finish fifth among nine teams at the JMU Open men’s cross country race Saturday in New Market. Duke and Georgetown tied for first at the event with their respective 33-point totals, while the Hoyas’ Matt DeBole won the 8K race in 25:03. The Lancers will compete again September 29 at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
At the New Market Battlefield, Longwood was led by freshman Matt Kroetch/Herndon (Oakton) with his time of 26:41 in the 8K (5-mile) race to finish 23rd among 86 runners. Kroetch was followed by freshman Daniel Honey/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) (27:14, 36th), junior D.J. Palmer/Chantilly (Chantilly) (27:31, 41st), along with sophomores Evan Kearney/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) (27:38, 42nd) and Matt Gordon/Annandale (Bishop Ireton) (28:29, 51st). Honey ran a new personal-best time.
Others running for the Lancers included sophomore D.B. Livesay/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (28:42, 53rd), junior Mark Anderson/Chesapeake (Western Branch) (29:04, 57th), freshmen Babur Kohy/Fairfax (Chantilly) (29:13, 60th) and Ross Roberts/Powhatan (Powhatan) (29:25, 63rd), senior Chris Gibbs/Richmond (Lloyd C. Bird) (29:31, 64th), along with freshman Trey Brindle/Chesterfield (Manchester) (32:23, 77th). Livesay, Kohy, and Roberts each ran new personal-best times.
