BOX SCORE
LAWRENCEVILLE N.J.-- Longwood University men’s soccer suffered a 2-0 set back in this afternoon’s match-up with Rider in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. The loss puts the Lancers at 0-3 on the season, while the Broncs improve to 2-1-1. Longwood will travel to Towson, Md., for a 1 p.m. match with the Tigers on Sunday, September 3.
Longwood came out and dominated the opening 30 minutes, controlling the ball and flow of the game. Rider broke the scoreless tie at 32:04 of the first half on a counter attack as the Broncs Mike Juska put a 20-yard shot in the back of the net for the early lead.
Longwood couldn’t get anything going in the second half and the Broncs looked to double their lead. Longwood was whistled for a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick. The Lancers’ junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) however, stopped Rider’s Dylan Matlack attempt keeping the deficit at one goal with 21:10 to go in the game. Rider was able to tack on another goal 74:12 into the match when the ball was deflected in by an LU defender, pushing the game out of reach for the Lancers.
“We need to start putting together a full 90 minutes of good soccer,” explained head coach Jon Atkinson. “We can’t play 30 minute spurts here and there and expect to come out with a win.”
Rider held a 17-9 advantage in shots, and 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Youmans recorded three saves in 90 minutes of work, while Rider’s Daniel Riverso stopped all three shots that came at the Broncs’ net.
