BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University settled for a 2-2 women’s soccer tie with visiting UMBC Wednesday evening at the new Athletics Complex in Farmville; a match ended by the game officials at 82:10 due to lightning. There was no improvement in the weather following a 45-minute delay and the contest became official as the Lancers’ record is now 1-1-1, while the Retrievers are also now 1-1-1. Longwood will play again next Monday, September 4 (Labor Day), hosting Campbell University at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 3 p.m..

Against UMBC, the two teams battled evenly throughout and were scoreless at the intermission. The visitors managed to take a 1-0 lead early in the second half at 48:30 on a penalty-kick goal by junior Jessica Young after a foul in the box. Longwood tied the contest at 1-1 about 10 minutes later with an own-goal at 58:03 on a ball that deflected off the leg of a UMBC defender and past its keeper on a crossing attempt by senior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam).

The Lancers went ahead 2-1 just minutes later at 63:54 as senior Vanessa Congdon/Charlotte, N.C. (Charlotte Catholic) finished into the right-side of an open net on another nice feed by Crane from the left side. UMBC, though, forged yet another tie at 2-2 when senior Mary Hearin scored unassisted from a loose ball in the box at 71:42. Unfortunately, neither team was able to score again nor was afforded an opportunity at the game’s finish due to the severe weather that moved into the area.

Longwood took a 16-9 advantage in shots, and had a 5-1 edge in corner-kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (82:10, 2 ga, 3 sv) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers. Sophomore Catie Bukowski (82:10, 2 ga, 9sv) also went the distance in front of the net for the Retrievers.
