BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood and Liberty played 102 minutes of scoreless soccer, until the game was decided on a penalty kick 2:25 into the second overtime, lifting the Flames over the Lancers 1-0. Longwood falls to 0-2 on the season, while this evening’s match-up was the season opener for Liberty giving them a 1-0 record this season. The Lancers will return to action on Friday, September 1, when they travel to Rider for a 4 p.m. match with the Broncs.
In a see-saw battle for the first 45 minutes, Longwood came out strong while out-shooting Liberty 6-2. Junior Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) had the Longwood’s best chance of the half when he re-directed a corner from classmate Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) to the upper right corner beating Liberty’s keeper. However the shot was headed-out the last minute by a Flame defender keeping the game scoreless. Off a free kick later in the half, Harney fired a shot 20 yards out that deflected off the wall and sailed just wide of right post.
Coming out of the halftime break, Liberty controlled the flow of the game pressuring junior Boone Prentice/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quinice Orchard) and the Longwood defense. Longwood’s keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) anchored the Lancers, keeping all 15 second half shots out of the back of the net to send the game into overtime.
After the two squads played the first ten minutes with no result, Longwood and Liberty took the field for the final overtime where the game was decided. Liberty’s Adrian Bumbut was tripped up by an LU
defender, who was whistled for a foul inside the box, leading to the penalty kick. The Flames' Darryl Roberts put the ball to the right as Youmans went left, breaking the scoreless tie and
giving the Flames the win.
Liberty outshot Longwood 19-7 and held a 8-2 edge in corners. In 102:25 of time in net Youmans finished with 10 saves, while Liberty’s Kevin Mahan recorded two.
