FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University rallied for a 3-2 women’s soccer overtime victory past visiting Wofford College Sunday afternoon at the new Athletics Complex in Farmville. Freshman Sarah Fening/Manassas (Battlefield) scored the game-winning goal five minutes into the extra period, assisted by classmate Tia Nardella/Brookline, Mass. (Brookline. The exciting finish allowed the Lancers to improve to 1-1 while the Terriers dropped to 1-1. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, August 30, hosting UMBC at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 5 p.m..
Against Wofford, the visiting Terriers led 1-0 at the intermission after tallying the opening goal at 36:39 when freshman Aubrey Thomson scored from the left side on a one-touch finish to a serve from classmate Blair Green. Longwood tied the contest at 1-1 midway through the second half when Nardella scored at 67:32, assisted by sophomore Cassie Lynn/Virginia Beach (Kellam) -- also a one-touch finish off the pass from the left side.
Wofford again took the lead at 82:45 as senior Jessica Connett scored unassisted off a set piece while beating the host keeper. The Lancers, however, refused to quit and forced overtime with the game-tying goal at 88:47 when junior Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) headed the ball into the net with an assist from sophomore Maddie Stevens/Charles Town, W.Va. (Jefferson). In the first sudden-death, 10-minute OT period, Nardella fed a long ball down the right side to Fening who promptly put the ball into the net over the charging keeper’s head.
Wofford took a 9-8 edge in shots, and had an 8-3 advantage in corner-kicks. Sophomore keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (95:00, 2 ga, 3 sv) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers. Senior Austin Somers (95:00, 3 ga, 3sv) also went the distance in front of the net for the Terriers.
