Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener At Wofford 1-0

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-- Longwood University dropped a 1-0 decision to Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina in its season opener of the 2006 season. Longwood was unable to make-up an early one-goal deficit in the loss and played a man down for most of the second half. The Lancers will return to action on Tuesday, August 29, when they host Liberty for a 7 p.m. match at Longwood’s new Athletics Complex.

Wofford’s Joel Kozak put the Terriers on the board 35:51 into the match, after settling a cross from Moe Kelli and firing it past Lancer goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus).

In physical match, where 31 total penalties were called, a Longwood player received a second yellow card sending him off for the rest of the match, and giving Wofford a man advantage for the final 37:17. Despite being down a man, the Lancers continued on the offensive front and held a 12-7 shot advantage in the second frame. Offensively junior midfielders Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) and Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) tallied a team high three shots each putting one on net in the loss.

Longwood finished with a 17-13 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Youmans tallied four saves in 90 minutes of time in net for the Lancers, while Wofford’s Joey Taylor kept everything in front of him, making five stops.
