FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-0 women’s soccer decision to visiting Liberty University Friday night at the new Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the 2006 regular season opener for each team as the Flames improved to 1-0 while dropping the Lancers to 0-1. Longwood will play again on Sunday, August 27, hosting Wofford College at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 4 p.m..
Against Liberty, the visiting Flames tallied the opening goal at 12:59 when freshman Maggie Woody drilled a free kick from 25 yards over the head of the host keeper. Liberty increased its advantage to 2-0 at the intermission as senior Kristin Faxon scored unassisted as well with a rebound put-back to the lower left post at 17:22.
Longwood began the second half with more offensive pressure but could not take advantage before the Flames secured the outcome with another goal at 60:50. This time, junior Ashley Braam placed a hard shot to the right post off a nice through-ball from senior Mandee Wheelock.
Liberty took a 13-6 edge in shots, though Longwood had a 7-5 advantage in corner-kicks. Senior keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) (90:00, 3 ga, 3 sv) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers. The Flames split time between senior Katherine Neff (45:00) in the first half and freshman Michelle Rich (45:00, 2 sv) in the second half.
Longwood’s new Athletics Complex is located adjacent to the Longwood Golf Club on Johnston Drive in Farmville.
