Women's Lacrosse Defeats Visiting Lafayette 22-10

Senior Goalkeeper Emily Wilson Makes Five Saves and Scores Two Goals

FARMVILLE, Va. --  Longwood University earned a 22-10 women’s lacrosse victory over visiting Patriot League member Lafayette Saturday afternoon in Farmville at the new Athletics Complex. The win improves the Lancers overall record to 3-9, while the Leopards dropped to 4-7 on the year. LU had 10 different players score in the win, including freshman midfielder Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) who led Longwood with four goals. The Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday, April 12 when they welcome Virginia Tech to the Farmville. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Holding an 8-6 edge at halftime, Longwood scored 14 goals in the second half, and limited Lafayette to just four goals to earn the lopsided victory. Shannon Strain and freshman midfielder Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) each scored three goals in the second stanza. Also highlighting the second half was two goals scored by senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern). Wilson, who played 36 minutes in goal for the Lancers making five saves, came on as a field player for the final seven minutes and scored her first collegiate goal with 1:17 left in the contest. She added her second goal of her career just 45 seconds later.     

Lafayette had started the game off jumping out to a 2-0 lead five minutes into the contest on back-to-back goals by Samantha Ziegler, but six-straight goals by Longwood gave the Lancers the lead for good. Junior attacker Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) started off the first half run for LU, scoring three-straight goals. Shannon Strain, junior attacker Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) and freshman midfielder Ann Rae Keel/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) closed out the scoring barrage for the Lancers.

Longwood held the 43-31 advantage in shots and a 24-19 edge in ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) played the other 24 minutes in goal for the Lancers, allowing four goals while making seven saves.
