Game One Box ScoreGame Two Box ScoreFARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University swept a college softball doubleheader over visiting Georgetown University Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field to close out its 2006 campaign. The Lancers earned a 17-0 victory in five innings in the opener and then took a 6-0 decision in the nightcap. With the two victories, Longwood finishes the season with a 27-19 overall record, while the Hoyas finishes the season with a 4-22 record.
In the opener, Longwood used an 11 hit, 13 run fourth inning to capture the 17-0 lopsided win. The inning was highlighted by two-run home runs by both sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) and sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty). Senior outfielder Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) and sophomore outfielder Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) both tripled in the inning, while senior first baseman Victoria Masters/Lake City, Fla. (Thomas University-Ga.), freshman designated player Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) and senior second baseman Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) all doubled in the inning.
The Lancers scored one run in both the first and second innings and two runs in the third inning before the big explosion in the fourth. Ryan Washington gave LU the lead in the first when, after singling to right field, she stole second and scored on a double error credited to both Georgetown’s second baseman and third baseman. Longwood added its second run when junior catcher Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis), who doubled to right field, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Radford in the second inning.
The two-run third inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Ryan Washington and Masters.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the pitching win for the Lancers; her 22nd of the season. Mills allowed only two hits, while striking out five and walking one in four innings of work.
Shamana Washington started the second game off with a bang, slamming a three-run home run to left center; the 28th of her Longwood career.
The Lancers added a run in the third inning to increase their lead to 4-0. Ryan Washington doubled to shallow centerfield, advanced to third on a ground out to the shortstop by Masters and scored on a fielding error by Lacey Campbell at third base.
Longwood closed out its scoring in the fifth inning. Wilson started the inning off with a double to centerfield and scored when Ryan Washington cracked a ground rule double, also to centerfield. Ryan Washington capped off the Lancers scoring when she crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly hit by Shamana Washington.
Mills again earned the pitching victory for Longwood, allowing only three hits, while striking out four and walking one in seven full innings of work.
