BOX SCOREDAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team won its fifth-straight game this afternoon by defeating host Davidson 17-11. The Lancers improved their overall record to 6-9 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 9-7 on the year. LU, who had eight different players score in the win, was led by junior midfielder Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and sophomore attacker Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert), who scored four and three goals, respectively. Longwood will close out its 2006 campaign when it hosts American at the new Athletics Complex for Senior Day on Monday, April 24. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
The score was tied 4-4 late into the first half when Longwood rattled off five-straight goals to take control of the game and hold a 9-4 lead at halftime. Senior midfielder Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell) started off the five-goal spurt for the Lancers when she scored a goal with 9:52 remaining in the first stanza. Freshman midfielder Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) then tallied back-to-back goals at 8:58 and 4:04, respectively. Junior attacker Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) and freshman midfielder Ann Rae Keel/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) closed out the first half scoring for Longwood.
Longwood and Davidson traded goals for the first 12 minutes of the second half; each tallying four. The Lancers broke the back-and-forth game when freshman midfielder Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) and Cathleen Strain scored back-to-back goals at 10:29 and 9:01, respectively, to give Longwood a 15-8 advantage.
The Wildcats responded with two-straight goals of their own to slice the Lancers lead to five at 15-10, but Longwood scored two out of the final three goals of the half to earn the 17-11 victory. Bikowski and Cathleen Strain accounted for the final two LU goals.
Longwood held a slight 34-27 advantage in shots and held the 34-28 edge in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) played 53 minutes in goal for the Lances, making five saves, while sophomore goalkeeper Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) played seven minutes and stopped one shot.
