LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 8-0 collegiate baseball decision at Liberty University Tuesday in Lynchburg. The Lancers fell to 18-20 on the season, while the Flames improved to 29-9 overall with the home win. Longwood will play again Wednesday, April 19, at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg beginning at 7 p.m..
At Liberty, Longwood fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could not recover as the Flames added a run each in the second and fourth innings, two more runs in the sixth inning, and a final run in the eighth inning. The hosts out-hit the Lancers 15-7 en route to the eight-run victory.
Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-4) led Longwood at the plate with two hits, while junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3) and sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-2) each contributed a hit as well, though the Lancers did not get an extra-base hit.
Junior captain Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (4-3) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs with three strikeouts.
Liberty was led by lead-off batter Chad Miller (4-5, 2 RBI) who hit for the cycle with four hits and two RBI, including a home run in the first inning and an RBI triple in the six inning. Michael Just (3-4, 2 RBI) added three hits and two RBI for the Flames, including an RBI double in the fourth inning. Abe Yeakel (3-5, RBI) also collected three hits, including an RBI single in the first.
Ryan Page (7-1) earned the mound win for Liberty with the first 6.0 shutout innings, yielding five hits with two strikeouts.
