FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University swept its third-straight softball doubleheader this afternoon when it defeated visiting George Washington University. The Lancers defeated the Colonials 5-4 in eight innings in the opener and took a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. LU has won nine-straight games and holds a 22-18 record, while GWU fell to 20-18 on the season. Longwood will be back in action on Monday, April 17 when it welcomes Appalachian State to Lancer Field for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.

In the opener, sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) doubled to centerfield to start off the bottom of the first inning. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder Danielle Skapura/Friendswood, Texas (Friendswood), sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) hit a hard shot to the third baseman to score Hooe and give the Lancers the 1-0 lead.

George Washington took the 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Nikki Brooks started off the inning with a single up the middle. Brooks scored a batter later when Elana Meyers cracked a double down the right field line. Meyers scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice bunt laid down by Maryanna Mohan. The Colonials scored their final run of the inning when Katie Miller hit a single with the bases loaded which scored Mohan.

With two outs and Washington on first base, junior catcher/outfielder Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) hit a long ball over the left field fence to knot the game at 3-3.

The game stayed tied until the top of the eighth inning. With GWU’s Janelle Parker placed on second base due to the international extra inning rule, Katie Miller reached first base on a fielding error by junior first baseman Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle County) which advanced Parker to third. Parker would score and give George Washington the slight one-run lead when Lisa Cohen singled up the middle.

Longwood responded in its half of the eighth inning to earn the 5-4 come-from-behind victory. Washington, who was placed on second base, stole third on the first pitch of the inning to Wilson. Wilson then smacked a double down the right field line to score Washington and tie the game at 4-4. Wilson moved to third on a passed ball and then scored the winning run when freshman designated player Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) singled up the middle.

Sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the pitching win for the Lancers, giving up four runs, three earned, on nine hits, while striking out seven and walking two.

Miller took the loss for the Colonials, giving up five runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking two.

In the nightcap, George Washington started the game off with a bang as Meyers hit a lead-off home run to give the Colonials the lead.

The Lancers responded in the bottom of the first with a lead-off home run of their own. It was Hooe who hit the ball to deep centerfield and was able to round the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

GWU took back the lead in the top of fourth inning when a single hit by Jackie Yaniga scored Miller. The Colonials lead was short lived as the Lancers exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth to capture a four-run lead. Wilson and Radford both scored on a throwing error by the Colonials shortstop Meyers. Freshman pitcher/outfielder Denee Porter/Glendale, Ariz. (Sandra Day O’Connor) added the third run of the inning when she scored on a double hit by senior second baseman Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan), while Gordon and freshman third baseman Kori Bonner/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley) added the final runs on a single driven to centerfield by Hooe.

Porter and Mills combined for the pitching win for Longwood. Porter gave up two runs on three hits, while walking one in three innings of work, while Mills allowed no runs on four hits, while striking out two in four innings of action.
