HONOLULU, Hawaii. – Longwood University dropped a 9-3 softball decision to UNLV on Wednesday, March 8, in its first game of the Hawaii Tournament hosted by the University of Hawaii. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 9-8, while the Rebels improved their overall record to 12-10. Longwood, who also played host Hawaii on Wednesday, will face off against Penn State today, March 9 on the second day of the tournament. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m. ET.
UNLV used a two-run second and a four-run third inning to jump ahead 6-0. Kendall Fearn gave UNLV the lead with a solo home run to left field in the second inning and increased the Rebels lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning with her fourth home run of the year; this time a two RBI home run to left center. Caitlyn Paus capped of the fourth inning scoring when she was driven home on a double by Becky McDonald.
Longwood countered with a three-run bottom of the third inning to slice the Rebel’s lead to 6-3. With freshman catcher Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) on second base and freshman third baseman Kori Bonnor/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley) on first base, sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) homered to left field.
The game remained 6-3 until the sixth inning when UNLV’s Brittany Freight scored from third while Longwood was preoccupied with Maggie Livreri, who was attempting to steal second base. The Rebels added two more runs in the seventh inning to earn the 9-3 victory.
Freshman pitcher Denee Porter/Glendale, Ariz. (Sandra Day O’Connor) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up six runs on eight hits, while striking out one and walking one in three innings of work.
