Women's Lacrosse Falls To Atlantic Coast Conference Member Boston College 15-8

Junior Cathleen Strain Scored Three Goals In Setback

FARMVILLE, Va. --  Longwood University dropped a 15-8 women’s lacrosse decision to visiting Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Boston College Wednesday afternoon in Farmville at the new Athletics Complex. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 0-6, while the Eagles improved their record to 1-2. LU was led by the sister tandem of Cathleen and Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon). Junior Cathleen Strain scored three goals, while freshman Shannon Strain notched two goals and one assist. BC was led by Shauna Culhane who scored five goals and assisted on one other. Longwood will be back in action this Sunday, March 12 when they welcome Oregon to Farmville. Game time is slated for 11:00 a.m.

The Eagles opened up a 6-2 lead with 6:35 remaining in first half on two goals by Culhane (25:21, 21:44) and one goal a piece by Margot Spatola (24:56), Elizabeth Kadison (16:47), Maura Mahoney (11:09) and Lauren Fitzpatrick (6:35).

The Lancers scored two quick goals by freshman Kristen McLain/Springfield (West Springfield) and senior Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O'Connell) to slice BC’s lead to 6-4, but a goal scored by Spatola, assisted by Fitzpatrick, at the 2:43 mark gave Boston College the 7-4 halftime lead.

Four-straight goals by the Eagles to open up the second half push BC’s advantage to 11-4 with 13:46 to play in the contest. Shannon Strain stopped Boston College’s scoring barrage when she tallied a free position goal at the 12:22 mark, but the Eagles followed with three-straight goals to put the game out of reach at 14-5 with 2:45 remaining in the contest.

The Lancers closed out the final 1:47 of the game scoring three out of the final four goals of the contest. Cathleen and Shannon Strain scored back-to-back goals at 1:47 and 1:25, respectively, while freshman Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) scored the last goal of the contest with 26 seconds left in the contest.

Boston College took the 40-21 edge in shots, while forcing 18 Longwood turnovers, and taking a 29-18 advantage in ground balls. Boston College goalkeepers Katie Monaghan (25:33, 4GA, 1Sv) and Courtney Zwirko (34:27, 4 GA, 7Svs) combined for the Eagles win. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) started and played 30:00, yielding seven goals with seven saves, while sophomore Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) played 30:00, allowing eight goals and making seven saves.
