Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep Of Rider; Defeats Broncs 7-5

Sophomore Travis Lydon Goes 2-4, 2 RBI In Series Finale Against Rider

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 7-5 collegiate baseball decision past visiting Rider University Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, completing a three-game weekend sweep of the Broncs. The Lancers improved to 11-7 with the three victories, while Rider dropped to 0-6 this season. Longwood will play again on Tuesday, March 7, at James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association in Harrisonburg beginning at 2:30 p.m..

Against Rider, Longwood scored four runs in the first inning before adding three decisive runs in the eighth inning. In the first, junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-5, RBI) singled to lead-off and later crossed the plate on a steal of home when the runner on first instigated a run-down play. Sophomore Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (2-4, 2 RBI) later delivered a two-out, two-run single, followed by a run-scoring single by freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, RBI). In the eighth, Ames tripled to score Quigley who had reached on a lead-off single. Another single by freshman Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-5, RBI) scored Ames, and Bailey crossed the plate on a double from sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-5, RBI).

Rider scored a run in both the third and fourth innings before adding three runs in the ninth inning to make things interesting late. The Broncs were led by Scott Knazek (3-5, RBI) with three hits and an RBI, while Gene Crimoli (2-5, RBI) and Maurice Williams (2-4, RBI) each collected two hits and an RBI.

Longwood freshman Aaron Berg/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-0) earned his first collegiate pitching win with 4.2 innings of relief, yielding five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2) gained his second save, recording the final out on a fly-ball by the batter representing the potential game-tying run.

Derek Caldwell (0-1) took the mound loss for the Broncs while going the first 5.2 innings, yielding eight hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
