Binghamton Box ScoreDelaware Box ScoreGREENVILLE, N.C. – The Longwood University softball team defeated both Binghamton and Delaware today at the East Carolina Tournament in Greenville, N.C. The Lancers defeated Binghamton 7-2 to start the day off and then earned a 1-0 victory over Delaware to close out the day. The Lancers, who now hold a 8-6 overall record, will begin single elimination play at the ECU Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, March 5. Longwood will face Delaware at 11:00 a.m..
In its game against Binghamton, Longwood scored two runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Senior second baseman Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) hit a single that scored junior catcher Pepper Wilson/Mecahicsville (Lee-Davis) and gave LU the 1-0 lead. Junior designated player Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle County) scored the second run of the inning when she was driven home on a single hit by sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman).
The Lancers increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth, but a two-run bottom of the inning by Binghamton sliced LU’s lead to one.
Wilson gave Longwood back a two-run lead after she homered to lead off the top of the sixth inning. The Lancers then added three more insurance runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) hit a one-out single that scored both Hooe and freshman left fielder Danielle Skapura/Friendswood, Texas (Friendswood), while senior outfielder Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) doubled on the next play to score Ryan Washington.
In the game against Delaware, sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) was a key factor for the Lancers, as she only allowed one hit, which came in the fourth inning, over seven innings of work. Mills also struck out four batters and allowed no walks.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman third baseman Kori Bonnor/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley) drove in the winning run. Senior first baseman Victoria Masters/Lake City, Fla. (Thomas University-Ga.) began the inning with a walk. Freshman Alea Newman/Scottsdale, Ariz. (Chaparral), who came in to pinch run for Masters, advanced to second when Gordon reached first on a fielder’s choice. A sacrifice bunt by freshman pinch hitter Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) moved the runners to second and third. Bonnor then came up to bat and hit a hard ball to the shortstop which allowed Newman to score and gave the Lancers the 1-0 victory.
