FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader past visiting Rider University Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 8-3 and the second game 8-5. The Lancers improved to 10-7 with the two-game sweep, while the Broncs dropped to 0-5 this season. Longwood and Rider will play again on Sunday, March 5, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 1 p.m..

In the opener against Rider, Longwood scored one run in the second, two runs in the third, one run in the fourth, and two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. In the second, freshman David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (1-2, RBI) doubled to score classmate Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-3, RBI) who had reached on a bunt single. In the third, junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-4, 3 RBI) had a two-run double, while in the fourth, the Lancers scored on a throwing error. In the sixth, freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3, 2 RBI) had a two-run single. In the seventh, another run scored on an error before Bailey added a sacrifice fly. Junior Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (2-1) earned the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings, scattering eight hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts.

Bryan Wagner (3-5, RBI) led Rider, while Justin Roszkowski (0-1) took the mound loss with the first 3.0 innings, yielding six hits and three earned runs with one strikeout.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored three runs in the first, one in the second, and four runs in the fifth inning en route to its sweep of the twinbill. Childress (3-3, 3 RBI) led the attack with three hits and three RBI, including a two-run double in the first inning. Sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-3), Bailey (2-3, RBI), and freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-3, 2 RBI) each added two hits while Heidler had two RBI as well. Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (4-1) earned the pitching win with 3.0 innings of middle relief, yielding two hits and one earned run.

Tom Letizia (2-3, RBI) and Mike Poalise (2-3) each had two hits for the Broncs, while Erik Holck (0-2) took the mound loss with the first 4.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs with one strikeout.
