Game 1 Box ScoreGame 2 Box ScoreGREENSBORO, N.C. – Longwood University split a college softball doubleheader against host UNC Greensboro Thursday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C.. The Lancers fell 3-0 in the opener and then earned a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. LU now holds a 14-18 overall record, while the Spartans are currently 13-18 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Saturday, April 1 when it welcomes Howard University to Lancer Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
In the opener, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when UNC Greensboro scored two runs. Leslie Furness hit a two-run single up the middle that scored Kelly Allen and Lyndsay Mouse. Adriane Audley later homered to centerfield in the fifth inning to add an insurance run for the Spartans.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out one in three innings of work. Freshman pitcher Danielle Porter/Glendale, Ariz. (Sandra Day O’Connor) relieved Mills in the fourth inning and gave up one run on one hit and struck out two.
Hannah Angel posted the shutout for the Spartans by giving up two hits, while striking out four batters and walking two.
In the nightcap, Longwood broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Freshman third baseman Kori Bonner/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley) led off the inning with a walk and sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) followed with a double to left-centerfield. On the play, UNCG’s centerfielder bobbled the ball, which allowed Bonner to score all the way from first base. Hooe scored one batter later on a RBI fielder’s choice hit by freshman outfielder Danielle Skapura/Friendswood, Texas (Friendswood) to give the Lancers the 3-1 lead.
Longwood continued to hold the two-run cushion until Furness of UNCG led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run to left field that got the Spartans to within one run, but Mills retired the next three hitters in order to end the game.
Mills earned the victory for LU, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out two.
Danielle Byrne started and got a no decision for the Spartans after allowing only one run in four innings of work. Angel took the loss by allowing two runs on two hits in three innings of relief work.
