Baseball Rallies Past Radford 8-4

Junior Captain Tyler Ames Is 3-5, 2 RBI, Including Game-Winning Two-Run Single In 9th

RADFORD, Va. -- Longwood University took an 8-4 collegiate baseball victory at Radford University of the Big South Conference Wednesday afternoon.  The Lancers rallied for the ninth-inning win for the second-straight day (Campbell, W 8-7) while improving their record to 16-14 as Radford dropped to 4-21 overall.  Longwood will play again this weekend, April 1-2, hosting Maryland-Baltimore County for a three-game weekend series at Lancer Stadium beginning on Saturday (April 1) with a doubleheader at 1 p.m..
    
Scoreless through four innings, host Radford scored a run in the fifth inning to lead 1-0.  Longwood, however, came right back with two runs in the sixth for a 2-1 advantage.  The Highlanders responded with three runs in the seventh to lead 4-2, but the Lancers added another run in the eighth to close to within 4-3.  LU completed the comeback with five runs in the ninth inning to secure the four-run road triumph.
    
In the sixth, redshirt sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (3-4, 2 RBI) began the winning effort with a two-out, solo home run to left center field, his second homer this season.  Junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4, 2 RBI) followed with his 11th double of the campaign to left field, and scored when freshman Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-5, RBI) followed with a single.  In the eighth, junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (3-5, 2 RBI) led-off the inning with a single and later crossed the plate on an RBI ground-out by Childress.
    
In the decisive ninth, sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3) opened the frame with an infield single and was followed by a pinch-hit single from classmate Joe Bott/Elyria, Ohio (Elyria Catholic) (1-1) with a fielding error that moved them to second and third, respectively.  With two outs, Ames came through with the clutch hit, a two-run single to center field.  Freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4) added another single to move Ames to third before the duo executed a double-steal allowing Ames to cross the plate.  Zigrang added an RBI single to score Heidler, and Childress followed with anther RBI single to plate Zigrang who had moved to second on a passed ball.
    
Freshman John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (1-1) earned the pitching win with the final 2.1 scoreless innings, yielding just one hit.  Classmate Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) went the first 6.1 innings on the mound, scattering seven hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts.
