FARMVILLE, Va. --  Longwood University dropped a 9-7 women’s lacrosse decision to visiting UC Davis Sunday afternoon at the new Athletics Complex in Farmville. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 1-9, while the Aggies improved to 5-3 on the year. LU was led by senior midfielder Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) who scored three goals; all in the second half. Longwood will be back in action Tuesday, March 28 when it plays at Howard. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Longwood led early in the first half 2-1 after senior midfielder Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell) scored a goal at 29:09 and 20:44, respectively. UC Davis countered with three-straight goals to take a 4-2 advantage. Katie McGovern scored at 17:18, while Katie McMahon scored back-to-back goals at 16:09 and 13:34.

A goal by junior attacker Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half cut the Aggies lead to 4-3, but a goal by McMahon at the 5:12 mark and a goal by McGovern with 54 seconds left in the half gave UC Davis the 6-3 halftime lead.

The Aggies scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to quickly pull ahead 8-3. Megan O’Connor and Kaitlin Moore accounted for the UC Davis goals.

Longwood mounted a comeback, scoring four-straight goals to pull within one of the Aggies at 8-7. Shafer started things off for the Lancers scoring back-to-back unassisted goals at 20:38 and 16:00, respectively. Freshman midfielder Dee Warehime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) scored exactly two minutes later, while Shafer capped off LU’s scoring barrage with her third goal over a nine minute span at the 12:20 mark.

The Lancers continued to pressure, but with 56 seconds left in the game O’Connor scored an unassisted insurance goal to put the game out of Longwood’s reach.

UC Davis held a slight 20-19 edge in shots, while Longwood held a 28-24 advantage in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the contest making seven saves for the Lancers. Aggie goalkeeper Hilary Harkins made eight saves for UC Davis.
