Radford Box ScoreRADFORD, Va. – The Longwood University softball team fell to host Radford 4-3 in the championship game of the Highlander Tournament this afternoon. The Lancers defeated Georgetown 26-0 in five innings earlier in the day to earn a spot in the championship contest. Longwood, who is currently 13-17 on the year, will be back in action Thursday, March 30 when it plays a doubleheader at UNC Greensboro. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
With the scored tied 1-1 going into the third inning in the championship contest against Radford, Longwood scored a run in the top half of the inning to take the slight lead. Sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman), who singled up the middle, advanced to third on a double hit to center field by freshman outfielder Danielle Skapura/Friendswood, Texas (Friendswood). Hooe then scored on a sacrifice fly hit to left field by sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty).
The Highlanders scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to capture the 3-2 edge. With Cassie Rhodes on first base with one out, Amanda Walling hit a home run to left center.
The Lancers tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when pinch runner Alea Newman/Scottsdale, Ariz. (Chaparral) scored on a single through the left side hit by senior second baseman Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan).
The game wasn’t tied for long, as Radford scored the winning run in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Michelle Carlson scored on a sacrifice fly hit to left center by Rhodes.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out one and walking two in 4.1 innings of work.
Against Georgetown, Longwood scored 26 runs on 24 hits over five innings. Hooe, Ryan Washington, and senior first baseman Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle County) each finished the game with four hits a piece, while Newman, senior designated player Victoria Masters/Lake City, Fla. (Thomas University-Ga.), and senior outfielder Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange) had three hits each.
The Lancers scored nine runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning and three runs in the third inning to hold a 13-0 lead. The first inning was highlighted by a grand slam home run hit by Hooe which scored freshman third baseman Kori Bonner/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley), freshman pitcher Denee Porter/Glendale, Ariz. (Sandra Day O’Connor) and Flint. The second and third innings were also highlighted by home runs. Shamana Washington hit a solo home run to center field in the second inning, while Ryan Washington cracked a three-run homer in the third inning.
A six-run fourth inning and a seven-run fifth inning capped off the impressive 26-0 win for the Lancers. It was Masters who shinned in the sixth and seventh innings for Longwood as she hit a grand slam home run in each inning.
Mills and Porter combined for the pitching shutout win for LU. Mills gave up two hits, while striking out four in 3.0 innings of action, while Porter gave up three hits, while striking out two in 2.0 innings of work.
