Bethlehem, Pa. --  Longwood University dropped a 13-11 women’s lacrosse decision to host Lehigh, members of the Patriot League, Sunday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa. The Lancers fell to 1-8 on the year, while the Mountain Hawks improved their record to 3-4. LU was led by senior Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell) who scored a career-high six goals in the setback. Lehigh was paced by Amy Chamberlain who tallied five goals and one assist. Longwood will be back in action on Sunday, March 26 when it welcomes UC Davis to the new Athletics Complex. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.

With the game tied 2-2 with 14:57 remaining in the first half, Lehigh scored three-straight goals to take a 5-3 lead; a lead it would not relinquish. Chamberlain tallied back-to-back goals for the Mountain Hawks, while Kara Chalanick scored a free position shot to put Lehigh up three goals.

Longwood answered with two goals of its own; one by junior attacker Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) at the 1:40 mark and one by Bikowski, her third of the half, at the 1:04 mark, to cut Leigh’s lead to 5-4. Sara MacIntyre scored a goal for the Mountain Hawks with 40 seconds remaining before intermission to give Lehigh the 6-4 halftime advantage.

The Mountain Hawks pushed their lead to 9-5 eight minutes into the second stanza, but the Lancers responded by rattling off three-straight goals to cut Leigh’s lead to one goal. Bikowski, freshman Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (The John Carroll School), and freshman Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) accounted for LU’s goals.

Chamberlain scored her fourth goal of the game to stop Longwood’s scoring streak, but a goal by Bikowski and freshman Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) tied the game at 10-10 with a little over 13 minutes to play in the contest.

The Mountain Hawks took control of the game in the closing minutes though, scoring three-straigh goals to recapture the lead. Chamberlain, MacIntyre and Megan Tenety accounted for Lehigh’s goals.

Longwood could not overcome the three-goal deficit, only scoring one goal in the closing minutes, as the Mountain Hawks earned the 13-11 victory.

The Lancers held the 30-25 advantage in shots and the 20-18 edge in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the game making 11 saves for Longwood, while Lehigh goalkeeper Kyle Begina made 15 saves for the Mountain Hawks.
