Box ScorePHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Longwood University dropped a 13-9 women’s lacrosse decision to host La Salle Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa.. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 1-7, while the Explorers improved their record to 2-5. LU was led by senior midfielder Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax), junior attacker Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and junior attacker Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) who each scored two goals a piece. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, March 19 when it plays at Lehigh.
Longwood opened the game with two goals in the first 10 minutes to take the lead. Both Strain (22:51) and Shafer (20:59) scored unassisted goals for the Lancers. The Explorers bounced back, tying the game with two free position goals by Emily Bonczek (19:22) and Kat Prokop (15:20).
Freshman midfielder Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) notched a goal with 14:30 remaining in the half to give LU the lead, but La Salle evened the score again with a goal by Kristen Davis.
With 5:45 to play in the half, Ann Anderson scored on an assist by Mara Sardella to give the Explorers their first lead of the day at 4-3.
The teams played evenly for the rest of the first stanza and went into the halftime tied at 6-6.
Davis scored to give La Salle the one goal edge 1:44 into the second half, but the Lancers responded with a goal by freshman Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) 34 second later.
With 27:12 to play in regulation, the Explorers took control of the contest, scoring four-straight goals to take a commanding 11-7 lead. Barry broke La Salle's scoring barrage with a goal at the 15:48 mark.
The teams traded the next two goals and with time expiring, the Explorers tallied a last second goal to give La Salle the 13-9 victory.
Longwood held a slight 22-21 edge in shots and a 23-19 advantage in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the contest making six saves for the Lancers.
