FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 15-10 women’s lacrosse victory over visiting Pac-10 member Oregon Sunday morning in Farmville at the new Athletics Complex. The win breaks a six-game losing streak for the Lancers and improves their record to 1-6, while the Ducks dropped their overall record to 3-3. LU was led by sophomore attacker Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) and senior attacker Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) who both scored three goals a piece. Haines also added one assist. Longwood will be back in action Saturday, March 18 when it plays at La Salle. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
With Oregon leading 3-2 11 minutes into the first half, the Lancers stepped up their game scoring three-straight goals to capture the lead; a lead it would not relinquish. Junior attacker Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) tied the game with an unassisted goal at 16:19. Haines scored the eventual game-winner at 15:15, while Strain capped off the three-goal run with a goal assisted by senior midfielder Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell) at the 13:42 mark.
Oregon stopped Longwood’s scoring barrage with 7:40 left in the first half on a free position goal scored by Jenny Brown, but the Lancers pushed their advantage back to two goals when freshman attacker Michelle Owen/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) tallied a goal with 15 seconds left before halftime.
Longwood continued to distance itself from Oregon early in the second half by scoring three quick goals. Junior attacker Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson), Haines and freshman midfielder Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) accounted for the Lancer goals.
The Ducks had an answer, scoring two goals of their own to slice the lead to 9-6, but four-straight goals by the Lancers gave LU its largest advantage of game at 13-6.
Oregon did not give up as it scored four-straight goals of its own to cut Longwood’s lead to 13-10. The Lancers would not let the Ducks get any closer though, as freshman midfielder Liz Sellmayer/Baltimore, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) scored two goals to close out the game and give LU the five-goal victory.
Oregon took a slight 31-28 edge in shots, but Longwood forced Oregon to turn the ball over 22 times and held a 29-19 advantage in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) made 10 saves in the game, while sophomore keeper Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) made two saves in nine minutes of action.
