Baseball Falls To Old Dominion 6-1

Sophomore Shortstop Nick von Gersdorff (2-4) Collects Two Hits Against Monarchs

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-1 collegiate baseball decision to visiting Old Dominion University Wednesday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers are now 8-7 this year, while the Monarchs improved to 11-2.  Longwood is scheduled to play again this weekend, March 4-5, hosting Rider University for a three-game weekend series at Lancer Stadium that begins this Saturday (3/4) with a doubleheader at 12 p.m..
    
Against Old Dominion, the host Monarchs scored the only two runs they would need in the first inning before adding three runs in the sixth, and one more run in the eighth inning.  ODU was led by Tyler Belcher (2-5) and Justin Gregula (2-5, RBI) with two hits each.  Anthony Shawler (1-0) earned the pitching win with the first 5.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts.
    
Longwood was led by sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4) and freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (2-4, RBI) with two hits each.  Maupin drove in the only Lancer run with a one-out double to the left field corner in the ninth inning.
    
Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (3-1) took the mound loss with the opening 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts.  Classmate Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) pitched effectively for 2.0 innings, yielding two hits and one unearned run with one strikeout.
