Men's Basketball Defeats Shenandoah 87-68; At Liberty University Next Monday (Feb. 13) Night

Sophomore Brandon Giles Scores Career-High 15 Points Against Hornets

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 87-68 men’s basketball victory past visiting Shenandoah University Wednesday night in Willett Hall, giving the Lancers four-straight home wins and their fourth win in five games overall. Sophomore Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) led Longwood (7-17) with his first career double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate Brandon Giles/Gaithersburg, Md. (Magruder) added a career-high 15 points. The Hornets (9-11) were led by Jeremiah Lawrence with 17 points. Longwood will play again on Monday, February 13, at nearby Liberty University of the Big South Conference beginning at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg at the Vines Center.

Longwood finally pulled away from Division III Shenandoah midway through the second half with a 13-3 run for a 65-55 lead at 8:16. The Lancers had been tied at 52-52 (12:13), the fifth tie of the game, before a jumper from junior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) began the spurt at 11:52 that ended with two free throws from freshman Kirk Williams/White Plains, N.Y. (Woodlands) just 3:36 later. Back-to-back three-point field goals from Giles (3:13, 2:35), and a fastbreak dunk from Williams made it 79-63 with 2:02 remaining. Longwood secured the final margin with 6-10 free throws and another dunk from Sumter over the final 1:40.

Longwood scored the first five points of the game on a layup from sophomore Lamar Barrett/Providence, Rhode Island (St. Andrews School) and a three-pointer from Smith and never trailed in the contest, though it was tied on the five occasions. A three-pointer from Giles at 14:22 made it 19-11, and 10 first-half points from junior Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute) kept the Lancers in control during the opening half. A pair of Sumter free throws at 6:42 gave LU its largest lead of the first period at 34-24. A 12-4 Shenandoah run cut the margin to 38-36 just before halftime, though a Smith layup put the hosts in front 40-36 at the intermission.

Smith finished with his first career double-double of 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, making 7-10 shots from the field, adding four assists and two blocks. Giles had a career-high 15 points, making 4-5 three-pointers, adding a game-high six assists. Sumter and Barrett each had 15 points as well for the Lancers, with Sumter adding three assists and a game-high five steals. Morgan finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Williams contributed 11 points as six players scored in double-figures. LU shot 53% (32-61) from the field, including 28% (5-18) on three-pointers, and 60% (18-30) at the free throw line. The Lancers out-rebounded the Hornets 39-28, and forced 20 turnovers.

Lawrence had 17 points to lead Shenandoah, while Steven Johns added 15 points. Mouktar Fawehinmi finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and James Brodie added 10 points. The Hornets shot 48% (25-52) from the field, including 25% (4-16) on three-pointers, and 64% (14-22) at the line.
