Women's Basketball Defeats Visiting Southern Virginia 85-42

Senior Amber Mason Finsihes With A Double-Double of 17 Points and 10 Rebounds

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women’s basketball team defeated visiting Southern Virginia University 85-42 this evening at Willett Hall in Farmville. The win improves the Lancers overall record to 8-15, while the Knights dropped their record to 10-14 on the season. Longwood, who had four players finish in double-digit points, was led by the senior tandem of Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) and Amber Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne). Ashley Mason finished with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds; both game highs, while twin sister Amber Mason added a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. LU will be back in action on Thursday, February 9 when it hosts Virginia Union at Willett Hall. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Longwood, who forced Southern Virginia to turn the ball over 18 times in the first half, held the visiting Knights to a season-low 14 points in the first stanza. The Lancers were able to gain the 28-point halftime lead by dominating the boards. LU finished the first half with 32 total rebounds; 18 of which were offensive. Longwood used the offensive boards to its advantage, scoring 16 second-chance points.     

The Lancers were paced in the first half by Ashley Mason and junior guard Abigail Freese/West Liberty, Ohio (West Liberty-Salem) who scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Longwood made nine steals in the first half, including three from Amber Mason, and registered eight assists, including three dished out by freshman guard Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan). 

Longwood continued its hot play in the second half, shooting an impressive 50.5% (17-33) from the field. The Lancers also held the 25-13 rebounding advantage in the second stanza, while dishing out 15 assists, blocking seven shots and making seven steals. 

Besides Ashley and Amber Mason, Longwood was led by Freese and Dyer, who finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Dyer also dished out six assists and grabbed seven rebounds; both career-highs. Freshman center Nadege Wandeu/Douala, Cameroon (Oak Hill Academy-Va.) also had a career-night for the Lancers as she grabbed 11 rebounds, scored six points and blocked three shots; all career-highs. The Lancers finished the game shooting 45.5% (35-77) from the field, including 27.8% (5-18) on three-pointers, and was 76.9% (10-13) from the charity stripe. 

Southern Virginia was led by Lynette Adams who scored a team-high 10 points, and added three rebounds. The Knights finished the game shooting 29.4% (15-51) from the field, including 38.1% (8-21) on three-pointers, and was 26.7% (4-15) at the free throw line.
