Men's Basketball Falls At Texas A&M-CC 92-64

Sophomore Dana Smith Scores 12 Points Against Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Longwood University dropped a 92-64 men’s basketball decision at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday night in Texas.  The Lancers (6-17) had a three-game winning streak stopped while led in scoring by junior Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute).  The Islanders (15-7) were led by Josh Washington with 16 points.  Longwood will play again next Wednesday, Feb. 8, hosting Shenandoah University on-campus in Willett Hall beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood began well in Texas, leading early at 12-6 on consecutive layups from Morgan – the latter with 13:26 left until halftime.  Texas A&M-CC, however, put together a 31-2 run to lead 37-14 at 3:29 as the Islanders scored 27 unanswered points to take control of the contest.  The Lancers trailed 40-20 at the intermission.

Longwood managed to close to within 16 points on three occasions early in the second half (42-26, 18:17; 45-29, 17:45, 52-36, 14:51).  TAMUCC, however, was in the bonus just 3:26 into the second half and shot the double bonus over the final 12:01.  The Islanders made 18-23 free throws in the second half, and finished the game 29-37 at the free throw line. 

Morgan led Longwood with his team-high 14 points, adding six rebounds, while junior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) added 13 points, five assists, five steals, four rebounds, and three blocks.  Sophomore Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) contributed 12 points for the Lancers.  LU shot 38% (21-55) from the field, including24% (4-17) on three-point field goals, and 55% (18-33) at the line. 

Washington led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with his game-high 16 points, while Mike Williams came off the bench for a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Aaron White and Matt Slapnick each had 10 points for the Islanders.  TAMUCC shot 41% (28-68) from the field, including 33% (7-21) on three-pointers, and 78% (29-37) at the line.
