BOX SCOREHARRISONBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 22-6 women’s college lacrosse decision to James Madison University Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg. The Lancers fell to 0-4 on the season, while the Dukes improved their record to 1-0. LU was led by freshman Ann Rae Keel/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) who scored two goals, while James Madison was paced by Kelly Berger with five goals and five assists. Longwood will be back in action Tuesday, February 28 when it welcomes William and Mary to the new Athletics Complex. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
Berger, Lynlea Cronin, Brooke McKenzie, and Emily Haller each scored two goals a piece in the first stanza to help the Dukes to a 13-4 halftime lead.
Senior classmates Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) and Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell), along with junior Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) and Keel accounted for the Lancer goals in the first stanza.
James Madison continued to dominate in the second half as both McKenzie and Berger scored three goals a piece for the Dukes. Berger’s second half hat-trick came on the final three goals of the contest.
Keel and sophomore Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) each scored a goal for Longwood in the second half. Haines also was credited with the assist on Keel’s goal.
James Madison took 49-12 edge in shots, while forcing 18 Longwood turnovers, and taking a 22-7 edge in ground balls. Duke goalkeepers Livvy King (starter, 56:00, 6, 2) and Kelly Wetzel (4:00,0, 0) each helped James Madison earn the victory. Senior keeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) started and played 45:00, yielding 16 goals with 10 saves. Sophomore Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) played 15:00, allowing six goals.
