Baseball Defeats Coppin State 6-0; Sweeps Three-Game Weekend Series

Junior Captain Brian McCullough Pitches 7.0 Shutout Innings With Career-High 9 Strikeouts

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 6-0 collegiate baseball shutout past visiting Coppin State Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers improved to 8-6 while completing a three-game weekend sweep over the Eagles who dropped to 0-9-1. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, March 1, remaining at home to host Old Dominion University of the Colonial Athletic Association at Lancer Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m..

Longwood had 12 hits and scored single runs in the first, second, and sixth innings before adding three runs in the seventh inning en route to the victory. In the first, junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3) drew a lead-off walk and later scored on a groundout by classmate Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-3, RBI). In the second, freshman David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (3-3, RBI) had a lead-off single and later crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by classmate Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-4, RBI). In the sixth, Loel’s double scored Childress who had reached on a one-out single.

The Lancers’ three-run seventh inning included a two-run double by sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-4, 2 RBI) that scored Ames who had reached on a fielder’s choice, and freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-5) who had also doubled. Zigrang would later score on a two-out RBI single by sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4, RBI).

Junior Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (1-1) earned his first win of the season while pitching the first 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts.

Dennis Lane (0-3) took the pitching loss for Coppin State with the first 6.0 innings, yielding seven hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts.

Longwood outscored the Eagles 27-11 during the three games while out-hitting CSU 46-19.
