FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader past visiting Coppin State Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 12-6 and the second game 9-5. The Lancers improved to 7-6 with the two-game sweep, while the Eagles dropped to 0-8-1. Longwood and Coppin State will play again on Sunday, Feb. 26, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 12 p.m..
In the opener, Longwood pounded out 19 hits and scored six runs in the fourth inning before adding three runs in the sixth inning en route to the victory. In the fourth, sophomore Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-2, 2 RBI) hit a two-run single for the Lancers before freshman Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (3-4, 3 RBI) delivered a two-run double. In the sixth, sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-5, 2 RBI) had a two-run double, while junior Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-5, 2 RBI) added an RBI single. Other top hitters in game one included junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (4-5) and freshman David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (3-5).
Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (3-0) earned the pitching win with 5.2 scoreless innings of middle relief, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
Matt Mansfield (1-4, 2 RBI) led Coppin State offensively, while Matt Bellon (0-1) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings -- allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, Longwood banged 15 hits and scored four runs in the second inning before adding two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings en route to the sweep of the twinbill. Childress (2-4, 2 RBI) had a two-run single in the second that followed an RBI single from Ames (2-4, RBI). In the fourth, Zigrang (4-4, 4 RBI) and sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (3-4, RBI) each had RBI singles. In the fifth, Zigrang added another RBI single after an RBI triple from Heidler (1-1, RBI).
Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-2) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0 innings on the mound, scattering two hits with a career-high eight strikeouts.
Corey Greene (2-4, 2 RBI) led Coppin State offensively, while Bill Auch (0-2) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings -- allowing 14 hits and nine earned runs with two strikeouts.
