NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 11-0 collegiate baseball decision at Old Dominion University Wednesday in Norfolk. The Lancers are now 5-6 this year, while the Monarchs improved to 8-1. Longwood is scheduled to play again this weekend, Feb. 25-26, hosting Coppin State University for a three-game weekend series at Lancer Stadium that begins Saturday (2/26) with a doubleheader at 12 p.m..
At Old Dominion, the host Monarchs scored the only run they would need in the first inning before adding a run in the second and fifth innings, four runs in the sixth, and four more runs in the eighth inning. ODU outhit Longwood 17-7 en route to the home shutout, led by Bryan Cipolla (4-5, 4 RBI) with four hits, including two doubles. Anthony Shawler (3-4, RBI) added three hits, including a home run and a triple.
The Lancers received singles from junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-2), sophomores Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (1-4) and Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-3), along with freshmen Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-3), Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (1-4), David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (1-3), and Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-3)
Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-2) took the tough-luck pitching loss with the opening 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned. Classmate John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) also pitched effectively for the Lancers for 3.0 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts. Hunter Hall (2-0) earned the pitching win for ODU with the first 6.0 innings, allowing six hits with four strikeouts.
