Women's Basketball Falls 99-48 At SEC Member South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Longwood University dropped a 99-48 women’s basketball decision to Southeastern Conference (SEC) member South Carolina this evening at the Colonial Center in Columbia, S.C. The Lancers were led by senior forward Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) who scored nine points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. LU will close out the 2005-06 campaign on Saturday, February 25 when they welcome Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Willett Hall. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.

South Carolina used the strength of its defense in the first half to build a 64-28 halftime lead. Longwood turned the ball over 18 times, with the Gamecocks making 12 steals and scoring 29 points off the Lancers mistakes. South Carolina also owned a 24-10 advantage in rebounds, including a 13-5 edge in offensive boards. USC, who shot a sizzling 63.6% (28-44) from the field in the first half, were paced by Lakesha Tolliver and Demetress Adams who each scored 13 points in the half.

Longwood did not back down in the second half, holding South Carolina to a little over half the points it scored in the first half. The Lancers also stepped up its game on the glass, grabbing 22 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.

Besides Mason, Longwood was led by freshman center Anna Steg/Fairfax (George C. Marshall) and freshman forward Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) who both scored eight points apiece. Steg also added three rebounds and one block. The Lancers finished the game shooting 36.0% (18-5) from the field, including 25.0% (4-16) on three-pointers, and was 61.5% (8-13) from the charity stripe.

The Gamecocks finished with three players in double-digit points, including Tolliver who scored a game-high 19 points, and added eight rebounds, blocked two shots and made one steal. Adams and Melanie Johnson chipped in 15 and 11 points, respectively. South Carolina finished the game shooting 52.6% (41-78) from the field, including 33.3% (4-12) on three-pointers, and was 52.0% (13-25) from the free throw line.
