FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 4-3 collegiate baseball decision to Liberty University Tuesday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. Ironically, the Lancers (5-5) had lost to the Flames (4-2) by an identical 4-3 score last Thursday (Feb. 16) in Lynchburg. Longwood is scheduled to play again Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk at 3 p.m..
Against Liberty, Longwood took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat as junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3) singled and later scored on an RBI single by classmate Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-5, RBI). The Flames tied it at 1-1 in the third inning as Chad Miller (2-2, RBI) homered to center field. The Lancers responded with a run in their half of the third as well when sophomore Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (1-5, RBI) hit a home run to left field and a 2-1 advantage.
Liberty tied it at 2-2 in the fifth inning when Michael Just (3-4) singled and later scored on a throwing error from right field on a single from Miller. The Flames scored the two decisive runs in the eighth inning as Miller walked and later scored on an RBI single by Derek Bennion (1-2, RBI) who later scored on a passed ball. Longwood closed to within 4-3 in its half of the eighth when freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-1) hit a double in his first collegiate at-bat, a shot off the wall in right center field, and later scored when classmate Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-3, RBI) doubled down the right field line.
Junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-1) took the pitching loss in relief while facing just four batters in the eighth, allowing one hit and two runs, one earned, while getting two outs. Classmate Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) had went the first 7.0 innings on the mound, scattering five hits and two runs, one earned, with four strikeouts.
Ryan Page (2-0) earned the pitching win for the second-straight game against Longwood with 2.0 shutout innings of middle relief, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Phillip Thompson (3) got the save with the final 1.1 innings, yielding no hits with two strikeouts.
