GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-0 softball decision to the University of Florida this afternoon to close-out the GRU Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 0-5, while the host Gators improved to 7-5 on the year. Longwood will be back in action this weekend, February 25-26 when it hosts the Longwood Classic. LU will face off against Quinnipiac (10:00 a.m.) and Radford (12:00 p.m.) on the first day of the classic.
Florida scored all of its runs in the bottom of the second inning, including three runs off a three-run home run by Kristen Butler.
The Gators broke the scoreless tie when Lauren Roussell, who opened the inning with a single to the shortstop, scored off a fielder’s choice by Kim Waleszonia. A sacrifice fly by Lindsey Cameron scored Lindsay Norfleet to increase Florida’s lead to 2-0. Butler then cracked her sixth home run of the year to increase the Gators advantage to 5-0. Melissa Zick closed out the scoring for Florida when she scored on an error by sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County).
Mills took the pitching loss for the Lancers, giving up six runs, five earned, on seven hits, while striking out two and walking four in five innings of work.
Shelly Stevens earned the no-hitter for Florida, striking out five and walking two in seven full innings of work.
