DENVER, Colo. -- Longwood University dropped a 10-7 women’s college lacrosse decision to Duquesne Saturday morning in Denver, Colo. The Lancers fell to 0-3 on the season, while the Dukes improved their record to 1-0. LU was led by sophomore Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) with three goals and one assist, with Duquesne was led by Kelly Mulford with four goals. Longwood will be back in action Sunday, February 26 when it faces off against James Madison in Harrisonburg. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m..
Longwood took the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Haines assisted by freshman Shannon Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) at the 28:13 mark. Duquesne responded scoring three-straight goals to gain a 3-1 advantage. Courtney Tamasitis, Ashley Wood and Mulford accounted for the Dukes goals.
Senior Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal at 15:19 and then senior Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) tied the game with a free position goal at the 10:46 mark. Duquesne scored back-to-back goals by Tamasitis and Meredith Williams at 7:24 and 4:19, respectively, to give the Dukes back a 5-3 edge. Cathleen Strain closed out the first half’s scoring with another free position goal with 1:15 remaining before halftime to cut Duquesne’s lead to 5-4.
Haines quickly tied the game at 5-5 57 seconds into the second stanza on a free position shot. The Dukes responded again, scoring back-to-back goals to push their lead to 7-5. Haines scored her third goal of the morning at the 19:55 mark to get Longwood within one goal of the lead, but Mulford scored three-straight goals to put the game out of the Lancers reach at 10-6. Senior Emily Bikowski/Fairfax (Bishop O’Connell) closed out the game’s scoring with a goal at the 3:32 mark.
Duquesne took a 41-19 advantage in shots, while forcing 17 Longwood turnovers, and taking a 40-26 edge in ground balls. Duke goalkeeper Meredith Norris played the full 60:00 minutes, allowing seven goals with four saves. Longwood senior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) also played the full 60:00 minutes, yielding 10 goals with 13 saves.
