GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Longwood University dropped a 13-3 decision in five innings to the University of Florida in its second game of the GRU Invitational hosted by Florida this evening. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 0-2, while the Gators improved their record to 5-3. Longwood will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, February 18 when it plays two more games at the invitational. The Lancers will face DePaul at 9:00 a.m. and then Penn State at 11:15 a.m.
After two scoreless innings, Florida used a three-run third inning and an eight-run fourth inning to gain an 11-0 lead.
Kristen Butler broke the scoreless tie when she hit a three-run homer in the third inning that also drove in Stacie Pestrak and Brooke Johnson.
Kim Waleszonia increased Florida’s lead to 4-0 early in the fourth inning when she scored on a fielder’s choice. Lauren Roussell then cracked a three-run RBI double to left center to give the Gators the 7-0 advantage. Melissa Zick continued the inning by driving in Johnson with a double to right field. After Mirelis Torres was inserted to pitch run for Zick, Lacy Howard doubled down the left field line to score Spack and push Florida’s lead to 9-0. Torres scored the Gators seventh run of the inning when she scored on a single by Waleszonia. Laura Templeton closed out the innings scoring when she drove in Howard with a single to second base.
Longwood got on board in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) hit a one-out solo home run.
The Gators scored two runs in the top of the fifth to increase their lead to 13-1.
The Lancers responded with a two-run fifth inning of their own. Senior infielder Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) began the inning with a lead-off walk. Gordon advance to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a fielder’s choice by sophomore outfielder Kristina Garrison/Alexandria (Mount Vernon). Garrison scored three batters later on a fielder’s choice by junior catcher Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis).
Freshman pitcher Denee Porter/Glendale, Ariz. (Sandra Day O’Connor) took the loss for the Lancers in her collegiate debut. She gave up five runs, three earned, on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Stacey Stevens earned the pitching win for Florida, going 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits, while striking out six and walking three.
