GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 5-0 softball decision to the University of Michigan, who is ranked first in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN/USA Division I National polls, to open the 2006 campaign at the GRU Invitational hosted by the University of Florida this afternoon. The Lancers are now 0-1 on the season, while the Wolverines, who are the defending national champions, improved their overall record to 2-0. LU will be back in action tonight at 7:15 p.m. when it plays host Florida in its second game of the invitational.

Longwood held Michigan scoreless for four innings. The Lancers and Wolverines both had two hits a piece over the first four innings, but neither team was able to take the lead.

Michigan finally broke the scoreless tie when it scored four runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Teddi Ewing singled through the left side and advanced to third after Tiffany Haas followed with a single to right field. Rebekah Milian gave the Wolverines the lead when she singled down the left field line to score Ewing. Sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) hit Samantha Findlay with a pitch to load the bases. Tiffany Worthy capitalized as she cracked a single to center field to score two runs. Grace Leutele capped off the inning’s scoring when she singled to center field to drive in Alessandra Giampaola.

The Wolverines increased their lead to 5-0 in the top of the sixth when Haas, who double to center field, scored on a wild pitch by junior pitcher Tori Flint/Charlottesville (Albemarle County).

Mills took the loss for the Lancers, giving up four earned runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings pitched. She also struck out two batters and walked three. Senior outfielder Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) finished 1-3 with a double, while sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) was 2-3.

Lorilyn Wilson earned the pitching win for Michigan, going the full seven innings, allowing three hits, while striking out 10 and walking two.
