Women's Basketball Falters On The Road; Drops 69-60 Decision To Maryland-Eastern Shore

Freshman Guard Courtney Dyer Scores 13 Points In Setback

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Longwood University dropped a 69-60 women’s basketball decision to Maryland-Eastern Shore this evening at the W.P. Hytche Center in Princess Anne, Md. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 9-17, while the Lady Hawks improved their record to 10-11. LU was led by senior forward Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) who scored a game-high 22 points, and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Longwood will be back in action on Tuesday, February 21 when they play at South Carolina. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Longwood led the first eight minutes of the game, including a 15-11 advantage with 14:11 to play in the first half. Steg gave the Lancers the four-point lead after grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring the put back.

With the score 19-16 at the 13:14 mark, Maryland-Eastern Shore scored six-straight points to take its first lead of the game at 22-19. A jumper by senior guard Amber Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) and a layup by Steg with 8:14 remaining in the half gave the Lancers back the lead, but UMES held LU scoreless for the next seven minutes and built a 10-point lead at 33-23. Ashley Mason scored the next five out of six points of the game, including a free throw to end the Lancers scoring drought, to help Longwood slice Maryland-Eastern Shore’s lead to 35-28. A jumper by Stowe and a Kennedy’s fourth three-pointer of the half gave the Lady Hawks a 12-point advantage at half.

The Lancers quickly cut the Lady Hawks lead to seven, 43-36, at the 16:09 mark of the second half after back-to-back layups by Ashley Mason, but a 10-0 run by Maryland-Eastern Shore broke the game open and gave UMES its largest lead of the game at 53-36.  

Maryland-Eastern Shore continued to hold a double-digit lead until a three-pointer by Dyer and two free throws by senior guard Jessica Wilkerson/Roanoke (Northside) cut UMES lead to seven, 63-56, with 1:11 to play in the contest. A free throw by Jasmine Speed and Rachael Goodwin and a layup by Brittany Adkins gave the Lady Hawks back a double-digit lead, but Longwood would not give up as Ashley Mason sank a three-pointer and was fouled on the play. She hit her free throw to cut Maryland-Eastern Shore’s lead to 67-60 with 22 seconds remaining. Goodwin sank two free throws to secure the nine-point victory for the Lady Hawks.

Besides Ashley Mason, Longwood was led by freshman guard Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monacan) and freshman center Anna Steg/Fairfax (George C. Marshall), who scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Dyer also made four steals, while Steg grabbed six rebounds and blocked on shot. The Lancers finished the game shooting 35.8% (24-67) from the field, including 16.7% (4-24) on three-pointers, and was 72.7% (8-11) from the charity stripe.

Kennedy, who drained six three-pointers, led Maryland-Eastern Shore with 21 points. Kennedy also added five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Daynese Stowe and Kristi Veltkamp both added 10 points for UMES. The Lady Hawks finished the game shooting 44.4% (24-54) from the field, including 36.8% (7-19) on three-pointers, and was 51.9% (14-27) at the free throw line.
