DENVER, Colo. -- Longwood University dropped an 18-4 women’s lacrosse decision at the University of Denver Thursday in Colorado. The Lancers (0-2) were led by senior captain Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) with two goals, while the Pioneers (1-0) were led by Tanya Fuchs and Karen Morton with four goals and two assists each. Longwood will play again Saturday, Feb. 18, against Duquesne University in Denver, Colorado at 9 a.m..
At Denver, the host Pioneers scored the first 10 goals of the match, including two each from Fuchs and Morton. Longwood finally scored when junior Kathleen Barry/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) found the net just before halftime as Denver led 10-1 at the intermission. The Pioneers added seven of the next eighth goals in the contest to lead 17-2 before the Lancers tallied two of the final three goals for the final 18-4 margin. Shafer had two of the goals in the second half, while freshman Kristen McLain/Springfield (West Springfield) scored her first collegiate goal. Fuchs and Morton each had two goals in the second half as well, while Kristie Leggio and Stephanie Greenlees each finished with three goals for the hosts.
Denver took a 38-18 advantage in shots, while forcing 15 Longwood turnovers, and taking a 27-23 edge in ground balls. Pioneer keepers Becky Childs (starter, 30:00, 1, 5) and Bec Hakendorf (30:00, 3, 2) each played a half in front of the net. Longwood senior captain and keeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) started and played the first 22:02, yielding nine goals with five saves. Sophomore Jen Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) played the final 37:58, allowing nine goals with six saves.
