Women's Basketball Falls To Virginia 93-42

Senior Forward Amber Mason Scores Team-High 13 Points

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 93-42 women’s basketball decision to Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Virginia this evening at University Hall in Charlottesville. The loss drops the Lancers overall record to 9-16, while the Cavaliers improved their record to 14-10 on the season. LU was led by senior forward Amber Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) who scored a team-high 13 points. Longwood will be back in action on Thursday, February 16 when they play at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Virginia forced Longwood to turn the ball over 12 times in the first half, including five times over the first five minutes. The Cavaliers capitalized on the Lancers miscues in the early minutes of the game, building a 15-0 lead 15:14 into the first stanza.

Amber Mason sparked the Lancers, draining three-straight three-pointers over a three-minute span to cut the Cavaliers lead to 29-13 at 8:33. Junior guard Abigail Freese/West Liberty, Ohio (West Liberty-Salem) assisted on two of Amber Mason’s three-pointers, while sister Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) assisted on the other.

Leading 42-22 at the 2:53 mark, Virginia used an 11-3 run to close out the half and go into the locker room with the 28-point advantage.
Virginia continued to dominate in the second half, scoring 21 points off of Longwood’s 13 turnovers. 

Longwood did pull down 18 rebounds in the second half, nine of which were offensive and forced the Cavaliers to turn the ball over nine times, six more than it did in the first half. 

Besides Amber Mason, the Lancers were led by freshman forward Amber Sims/Lawrenceville, Va. (Brunswick Senior) who scored 10 points, pulled down four rebounds and made one steal. Longwood finished the game shooting 29.6% (16-54) from the field, including 35.7% (5-14) on three-pointers, and was 50.0% (5-10) at the charity stripe. 

The Cavaliers, who had four players finish in double-digit points, were led by Lyndra Littles who finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds; both game-highs. Siedah Williams and Abby Robertson added 16 and 13 points, respectively. The Cavaliers finished the game shooting 55.9% (38-68) from the field, including 27.3% (3-11) on three-pointers, and was 63.6% (14-22) from the free throw line.
