Boiling Springs, N.C.- The Longwood women’s basketball team suffered a 66-44 setback on Saturday night in Boiling Springs, N.C.. The Lancers fall to 4-8 on the season while Gardner-Webb improves to 3-6 on the year. The Lancers will return to action on Wednesday, December 20, when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take part in the Vanderbilt Holiday Tournament. Longwood will open the tournament against Indiana State on Wednesday tipping off with the Sycamores at 6 p.m..
Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) hit two free-throws to put Longwood ahead 2-0 in the opening two minutes of the game. Gardner-Webb came out strong behind the arc, having its first three baskets come from three-point land, taking a 9-4 lead into the first media timeout. The Bulldogs built a nine point lead out of the timeout, but the Lancers were able to cut the deficit to three points after Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) hit a lay-up with 12:09 to go in the half. Gardner-Webb went on to outscore Longwood in the final nine minutes by an 18-8 margin to go into the locker room with a 15 point lead.
The Bulldogs’ bench was the difference maker in the first twenty minutes, outscoring the Lancers’ 17-2. Sims and Ashleigh Hollman/Centreville (Westfield) led the Lancers at the break each tallying six points. Candyse Kelly led the Bulldogs with eight points.
Out of the break, Small hit back to back jumpers to cut the deficit to 13 early on in the second half. That was as close as the Lancers got in the half, as Gardner-Webb continued to attack the Longwood defense in the match-up. Courtney Dyer/Richmond (Monocan) recorded all eight of her points in the second half including going 3-4 from the foul line. GW finished the game shooting 46.4% from the floor, its highest shooting percentage of the year, while Longwood shot 29.8% from the field.
Leading the way for Longwood was Small who finished the game with ten points and five rebounds. Joining Dyer with eight points was Sims and Hollman. Sims shot 4-6 from the field and tallied six boards. Anna Steg/Fairfax (George C. Marshall) was strong on the defensive side blocking a career high three shots in the loss.
