BOX SCORE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing, season-ending women’s soccer match to IPFW in a United Soccer Conference Tournament Quarterfinal Thursday night at Howard University’s Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C..  The Lancers and Mastodons battled through 90 minutes of regulation and two, 10-minute overtime periods tied at 1-1 before getting outshot 4-3 on penalty kicks to determine the outcome.  Officially recorded as a tie, Longwood completes its season with a final record of 11-5-3, while IPFW is 4-11-2 and advances to the conference tournament semifinals.  It’s the most wins for the Lancers against a Division I schedule, and also the most wins for the program overall since 2002.

Against IPFW, Longwood scored in the first half to lead 1-0 at the intermission after senior Tiffany Crane/Virginia Beach (Kellam) had a one-touch finish into the back of the net off a diagonal pass across the box from freshman Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove).  Sophomore Cassie Lynn/Virginia Beach (Kellam) also was credited with an assist on the play.  The Mastodons tied the evenly-played contest at 1-1 in the second half when Nicole Halls placed a bomb from nearly 40 yards into the upper 90 of the net.  It remained deadlocked the remainder of the way and through the extra sessions before IPFW earned the victory with the 4-3 edge during the PK shootout.

“You hate to lose in a penalty kick situation,” said 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer ‘93 (146-81-11).  “We played well enough to win but just didn’t get the goals.  We played with class and our seniors led the way.”

Longwood had an 18-5 advantage in shots, and took a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.  Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with two saves, while IPFW’s Shannon Lynn also went the distance for the Mastodons with five saves.
