Field Hockey Drops 4-1 To NorPac Foe Pacific

The Lancers Lone Goal Came Off A Penalty Corner In The First Half

FARMVILLE, Va.—The Longwood University field hockey team fell 4-1 to visiting Pacific Sunday afternoon in a NorPac conference match-up at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The loss puts the Lancers at 4-8-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play, while the Tigers improve to 8-6-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in the conference.  Longwood will return to action on on Saturday, October 14 taking on James Madison for a 1 p.m. match-up in Harrisonburg.
    
Longwood and Pacific battled for possession the first ten minutes, before Longwood opened up the scoring at the 10:17 mark on a penalty corner.  Junior Cristin Newbold/Norfolk (Maury) took the pass from sophomore Carra Bunner/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) and left the ball for junior Danielle Woodie/Fredericksburg (Chancellor) who fired a rocket into the back of the cage for the early 1-0 lead.  The goal was the first of Woodie's career.  Pacific quickly countered off the restart putting in a loose ball in front tying the game at 1-1 with 9:13 to go in the half.  The Tigers took the lead five minutes before the halftime break, when Pacific’s leading scorer Vianney Campos slid the ball past keeper Erin West/Stafford (North Stafford) for the 2-1 lead at the half.
    
The Tigers looked to go up byt two goals with about with 20:51 to go in the game when Campos fired a hard shot to the left corner that beat West, but defender Katie Murphy/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) trecked back and hit the ball out before it crossed the line for a defensive save. 

Pacific tallied two goals two minutes apart from each other for a 4-1 lead with 13:21 to go in the game. Longwood threatened late in the game, but could not find the back of the net making the 4-1 score the final.  West finished the game with three saves in 61:18, before junior Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) relieved her with 8:42 to go in the match.
