October 7, 2006

BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va.—The Longwood University men’s soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over District of Columbia Saturday evening at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The win puts the Lancers to 3-7-2 on the season while the Firebirds fall to 2-10.  Longwood will return to action on Tuesday, October 10, as they travel Radford for a 7 p.m. match-up with the Highlanders.

In a physical match from beginning to end, Longwood and UDC battled for 32 minutes to a scoreless tie before freshman Martin Vickerton/ Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) put the Lancers on the board 31:25  into the match.  Vickerton put in a free kick from the left sideline about 30 yards out for the 1-0 lead.  The Lancers kept the Firebirds quick counters in check, keeping pressure off the back line and junior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus).

Freshman Giovanni Peralta/Lorton (Robert E. Lee) made a move to beat a UDC defender and fired a shot just outside the 18 yard box that beat the Firebird’s keeper high, but bounced off the crossbar, keeping the game at 1-0 going into the break.

Longwood kept the pressure on coming out of the halftime break, and built a two goal lead with 36:15 remaining in the game as junior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) recorded his second goal of the year.  Vickerton put a free kick right to Harney’s feet, who made a run down the center of the field and fired a rocket from 20 yards out giving Longwood a 2-0 lead.

Longwood tallied its third goal three minutes later, as freshmen Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) and Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) teamed up with 33:16 to go in the game.  Germain made a run down the left sideline and crossed the ball in the box, where Diallo trapped it to his feet and put the ball to the lower right corner, pushing the game out of reach of the Firebirds.

“Our guys came out tonight mental prepared and ready to play,” stated head coach Jon Atkinson.  “This is an athletic squad in UDC and we just kept to our game plan and played Longwood soccer.”

The Lancers held a 19-6 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.  Youmans finished the contest with three saves in 81:06 of time in net, before junior Tyler Marsh/ Mechanicsville (N.C. Wesleyan) relieved him with 8:54 to go in the game.
