October 7, 2006

BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 2-1 women’s soccer home victory past visiting Francis Marion University Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. It was the second-straight win, and fourth in five matches for the Lancers who improved to 7-4-2, while the Patriots dropped to 5-5-3. Longwood will remain home next week to host Mount St. Mary’s University on Tuesday, October 10, at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 4 p.m..

Against FMU, the two teams battled to a scoreless first half while tied 0-0 at the intermission. Longwood was able to score the first goal of the match at 53:43 when sophomore Maddie Stevens/Charles Town, W.Va. (Jefferson) took a rebound and fired into the back of the net. Stevens followed a missed header off the crossbar by junior Aynsley Birkner/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) on a corner-kick opportunity. A standout defender, it was Stevens’ first collegiate goal for the Lancers. Francis Marion, however, came right back to tie the match at 1-1 as Ashley Fortune took a rebound of her own shot attempt that had been saved and placed the second attempt into the net at 59:19. The score remained at 1-1 over the next 25 minutes as it appeared the two squads would go to overtime.

Longwood freshman Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) had other ideas, though, as she was pulled down in the box and awarded a penalty kick which she promptly blasted past the Patriot keeper for the game-winning goal at 85:17. Mahon’s third goal of the season gave the Lancers their first-ever win over an FMU program that had won all three previous meetings since 1999, outscoring LU 9-4 in the process. The result came on a cold, wet, and windy day that still attracted a large Oktoberfest crowd (175) to the off-campus facility.

Longwood took a 15-10 advantage in shots, and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with six saves. Jacque Sutphin (90:00) also played the duration for Francis Marion with seven saves.
